Walking through the Old Town of Orissa’s Bhubaneswar takes one into a surreal world, where the temples are synonymous with peace and tranquillity and just outside; the streets are abuzz with a myriad of activity. An excellent short excursion for those interested in photography, this tour is ideal for capturing important monuments as well as daily street life.
In this Tour:
• The walk starts in the heart of an area known as the Ekamra Kshetra, or the "forest of mango trees" referred to in an old legend of Shiva. Ekamra Kshetra has temples ranging from 6th to 13th century AD, representing various phases in the development of Orissan temple architecture.
• While the temple architecture is remarkable, the streets and bazaars around them are not to be left behind. They keep the visitors captivated with activity and the dashes of colours from the vegetable vendors, flower sellers, street food and stalls selling religious paraphernalia are alluring.
• The presence of residences, shops, sacred tanks for prayers and ablutions, various rest houses and dharamsalas, and large-scale temple kitchens keep the area alive with their exploits.
