The neighbourhood of Malleshwaram in Bangalore is home to ‘upper-caste’ Kannada and Tamil speaking families, many of whom have been residing here since generations. This residential and bazaar area reflects the food traditions of these communities, thus offering a glimpse of traditionally authentic vegetarian South Indian cuisine. Additionally, this locality also houses a busy market exhibiting a wide range of clothing, kitchen implements and prayer paraphernalia, attracting throngs of people from other parts of Bangalore.
In This Tour:
• We begin our visit at the temple of Kaadu Malleswara, the patron deity of this neighbourhood.
• Accompanied by a knowledgeable foodie, we will then walk through the market, the main thoroughfare as well as tiny by-lanes, full of culinary delights which promise to fulfil every connoisseur’s appetite.
• As we walk through the market, we are surrounded by an array of shops selling fruits and vegetables, spice powders, coffee, papads, ghee, pickles and condiments, and the use as well as importance of each element as an ingredient of South Indian cuisine will be explained to you by your expert food-guide.
• While walking around and wafting in the aroma of the delicious foodstuff, we’ll stop at a couple of eateries to sample the offerings (snacks, both savoury and sweet). Look out for seasonal specialities and festival offerings.
