Located 3120 meters above sea level, the gorgeous town of Alchi comes with a 1000 year old legacy which is best explored through the magnificent temples that reside here.

The most famous structure here is the Alchi Gompa located in the Kagyur Lakhang Gompa. Home to many ancient books and an awe inspiring golden statue of Lord Buddha, exploring this town proves to be a rather inspiring experience for all.

Exploring the Magnificent Temples of Alchi
In addition to this, the Sumrstek Temple, home to 2 large Buddha Statues with the heads hidden in the roof, the Lotsa Temple with gorgeous murals, and the Vairocana Temple offer some exquisite insights into the thriving Buddhist culture in the region.

Each one of the shrines in these temples makes great use of psychedelic color schemes that are typical of Buddhist art. You will also come across diluted semi-precious stones into their work adding to the vivid and detailed appearance of the paintings and the statues.

The fact that this town is located on a relatively flat region, it is distinctively set apart from other monasteries in the Himalayas which are typically located on steep hills or mountain tops.

The true beauty of this region is amplified with a visit to the Rizong Monastery and a trip to the ruins of Basgo.

Exploring the Villages
Walking around in the village is rather easy, and a great way to take a break from all the sightseeing is by exploring the markets. Other activities worth considering include hiking.
