Falling in the Phalguna month’s dark fortnight, Mahashivratri sees a grand procession of the marriage of Lord Shiva to Goddess Parvati, starting at the Mahamrityunjaya Temple, through the decorated streets of Varanasi to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

Devotees fast, staying up all night to visit nearby temples, offering prayers and prasad to the god. This prasad can be in the form of milk, fruits, bhang, dhatura, coconuts, etc. and are proffered to the black Shivalings.
