Considered to be one of the most famous pilgrimage in India, this 700 year old tradition consists of a padyatra (journey on foot) where over 1 million pilgrims journey for 21 days to the Vithoba Temple in Pandharpur, Maharashtra.

Devotees also fast and take vows which are to be observed during the entire months of “Chaturmas”, the four month period during the monsoons.

Held in the months of June/July, this festival originates from the belief that today Vishnu falls asleep in the cosmic ocean of milk on his Shesha Naga. He awakens after four months in the month of Kartik, which falls between October and November.
