Island farms in the Kuttanad region backwaters are accessible by sailing on country boats through the pristine backwaters. The farm that we visit has been reclaimed from the lake, typical to this region and is 2meters below lake level. The retaining dyke around the perimeter keeps the lake water from entering the farm. En route an amazing insight is gained in Southern Indian village life.

In this tour:
• Take an introductory farm tour describing the traditional way of farming in this region. Here, all the planting is done on the ridges while the canals are used for natural fish culture including Karimeen (Pearl spot) and fresh water jumbo prawns (scampi).
• View the major crops on the farm – coconuts, toddy tapping, nutmeg, cocoa, banana, pepper and many other fruits, vegetables and spices.
• See the farm animals – cows, geese, ducks and hens.
• At the farm, we join our hosts in an interactive cooking session and lunch. The cuisine is predominantly Syrian Christian with a strong backwater influence.
Lunch contents:
• Fish-cantered dishes, farm vegetables/fruits, duck, chicken and occasionally other meats, supplemented with rice and rice-based local breads (appam, string hoppers etc.).
• Some specialities are karimeen fry, fish molee, prawn and scampi preparations, duck roast and curry, and red hot Kerala fish curry.
• The adventurous can drink toddy (country liquor), the fermented sap of the palm tree.
• Desserts are usually puddings, fresh fruits and local treats.
