Trashiyangtse

A rapidly growing town and administrative center of the district, Trashiyangtse is situated in a small river valley. The dzong overlooking the town was built in the late 1990s when the new district was created. Trashiyangtse is famous for its wooden containers and bowls, which are very popular souvenirs. The places of interest around Trashiyangtse are Chorten Kora, a dazzling white stupa next to the Kulong Chu River. Constructed in 1740 by Lama Ngawang Loday in order to subdue a harmful demon, it replicates the style and architecture of the Bodhnath stupa in Nepal. Bomdeling is a walk of about three hours from Chorten Kora, and is an annual migration place for black-necked cranes. Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary here is a top draw among tourists. The sanctuary has an area of 739 sq km of alpine meadow and temperate and warm broadleaf forests. The sanctuary has many breeds of animals and birds, like barking deer, red panda, snow leapord, blood pheasant, Himalayan red fox, grey headed woodpecker, and many more amazing creatures. The Trashiyangtse Dzong was re-built in 1656 by Terton Pema Lingpa from the ruins of Dongdi Dzong of 9th century. It was further renovated and sanctified by a sacred consecration ceremony in 2005.
