Almora

Uttarakhand

(Indian Himalayas)

Almora is famous for its wildlife, culture and cuisines; the hill town is located in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand state. The town shaped like a horseshoe boasts its pre-colonial heritage and an idyllic vibe. It is bound by thick forests of pine and fir trees and was visited many times by Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda who have mentioned Almora in their writings. The town is famously known as the town of temples and two major rivers Koshi (Kaushaki) and Suyal (Salmali) that flow through this region. Nearby tourist places are Chitai Temple, Kasar Devi Temple, Katarmal Sun Temple, Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary and Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum. One-day excursions can be made at the Bright End Corner's to have a view of the beautiful sunset. The ancient Chitai Temple is decorated with a unique collection of brass bells of different sizes gifted to the temple by devotees since centuries. Nanda Devi Temple is the cultural and religious centre of Almora now for hundreds of years and Lala Bazar is a market that is more than two hundred years old, with paved stone streets.

Tucked away in a corner between Nepal and China, this town of Uttarakhand is essentially a rather virgin tourist destination. Founded by the Chand Dynasty this town comes with the bloody history of the Gurkha Invasion in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Unlike most other famous hill stations in India that were discovered and then developed by the British, this destination was essentially dominated by the Chand’s who ruled the region for about 1000 years.

Historical Significance
Sitting aside the Rivers Kosi and Suyal, this gorgeous little hill station, comes with significant historic importance. Jawaharlal Nehru is known to have served time during the British Raj and is known to have written elaborate letters to his daughter about the moods of the nature that this place adopts through the year.

In addition to this, this destination is known for the tiger larks and its rich cultural heritage is witnessed through its stone paved roads, gorgeous building facades, murals and wooden homes.

If you wish to experience the local village life these beautiful foothills create a charming setting. A tourist highlight in this hill station is the 360 Leti which is known to offer a luxurious retreat for all.
