Carved out of the North Kheri Forest , Dudwa is a swampy depression with tall grasslands, marshes lakes and sal tree forest, Dudwa is a haven for Tiger lovers. Dudwa is as wild as wild can be and home to a large number of rare and endangered spices of fauna which include Tiger ( approx. 50) , rhino, leopard, Swamp deer , hispid hare, white & painted storks , king fishers, fly catchers, vulture partridge, in all 400 species of avian population have been listed. Being close to the Himalayan foothills, winters bring the migrating water birds to the Banke Tal ( Lake), egrets, cormorant, herons, several species of duck, geese storks, ibis and fishing eagles. Most prized habitat of the grass lands are a population of 1800 Indian deers, swamp deers and the magnificent antler barasingha ( 12 horns). Situated the in the Indo-Nepal border, the 614 sq kms reserve has lot of cross-migration of Tiger and elephants from the adjoining Karnali Sanctuary in Nepal.

Dudwa Tiger reserve is the greatest contribution to mankind by the great conservationist, nature enthusiast and veteran lover of wildlife Mr. Billy Arjan Singh, with whose constant ceaseless efforts with our late Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi , the Dudwa forest was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1965 and in 1977 the area was further extended to 614 sq. kms and declared as National Park, finally in 1988 it become part of Project Tiger.
