Our Trips - Festival Tours - Hemis Festival in Ladakh

Hemis Festival in Ladakh

The 10th day “ Tso – Chu” of the Tibetan lunar month is celebrated as the birthday of Guru Rimpoche Padmasambhava the founder of Tibetan Buddhism (whose present leader is The Dalai Lama living is exile at Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh). The Hemis Monastery in Ladakh celebrates this event in the form of a 2 days festival. The resident Lamas of the monastery celebrate this occasion with religious masked dances amidst funfair, with thousands of Ladakhis congregate and participate in the celebration. This festival takes a very auspicious turn every 12 years in the Tibetan year of the “ Monkey” when the gigantic two story high Thangka ( holy painting) depicting the episodes and life of Guru Padmasambhava is displayed to the public by way of procession, with chanting of hymns and celebrations. The next auspicious display will be held on 27th and 28th June in 2004 at the Hemis Festival in Leh, Ladakh.
