Mahavir Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, the founding father of Jainism is celebrated religiously across Jains in India. On this pious day, processions dot the streets of Vaishali, the birthplace of Vardhaman Mahavir and splendid chariots carry idols of the 24th and last Tirthankara (God) of the Jains.

The deity is ceremoniously bathed on the morning of his birth, with milk and water and six different pujas follow, after which it is placed in a cradle and carried across town, amidst cheers and floral showers. Key ingredients of the march include elephants, horses, drummers, dancers and earthen lamps, and Jains usually make four kinds of donations on this day, to rejoice the birth of their God.
