Here rose the potent city, Meliapor Named in olden times, Rich, vast and grand. - Luiz Camoens, Portuguese Poet, 1572

Since time immemorial, the village of Mylapore has been the religious and cultural epicentre of the Tamilians. Pre-dating Chennai, a visit to Mylapore offers a great insight into Dravidian architecture and the effects of the Portuguese invasion on India during the mid-sixteenth century.

In this Tour:
• During this walk, you will visit the Kapaleeswara temple with our knowledgeable guide. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple once stood at the ancient thriving seaport, up until the Portuguese destroyed it, pushing the natives inshore, where it stands gloriously today, having been re-built 300 years ago.
• This temple is the epicentre around which Mylapore is built, giving us great views of the surrounds and setting a fine example of the pure Dravidian style, with gopurams and mandapams.
• Walk through the neighbourhood, where you can experience Mylapore’s crowded chaos. The jewellers, silk merchants, fruit and vegetable sellers and flower vendors in the bazaars provide a colourful backdrop to the temple.
• Stroll through small lanes with old-style homes, through silk shops, stores selling music and religious memorabilia, ‘kutcheri’ auditoriums, etc.
• At the end of the tour, stop at the popular Saravana Bhavan for snacks and coffee.

Duration: 2 hours, ideally in the evenings.
