Nahsik (1 night)

Days  ( 2 - 3 )

Nahsik

Nahsik

The scenic city of Nashik resting on the shore of river Godavari in Maharashtra is known for its amiable climate and is popular for tourism. The city’s Kalaram Temple is a site of major importance, as it is the venue of the much awaited Maha Kumbha Mela that takes place every 12 years. Travelers can anticipate a wide array of cultural experiences in the exciting city that houses over a 100 primeval temples.

Activities

This morning the Deccan Odyssey brings you to the holy city of Nashik.

After breakfast you set out on a visit to the Trimbakeshwar Temple, located in the town of Trimbak, worshiped as one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva and as the symbolic source of the river Godavari, the most sacred river in South India.

This 18th century temple was built by Nanasaheb Peshwa in black stone and is located in the foothills of the Brahmagiri range, from which the Godavari originates as well. A unique feature of this temple is its linga, which has three hollow spaces said to contain the Indian holy trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in them. Hindus offer shraad prayers (prayers for the souls of the departed), perform abhishek poojas as well as pitru dosh and narayan nag balli poojas at Trimbakeshwar temple even today. The temple is however only open for Hindus and other guests may view the temple only from outside without entering it.

Alternatively, you could opt to visit the Pandu caves, a collection of 24 caves representing the Hinayana sect of Buddhism. Named after the color ochre, which is called pundru in Pali, these caves were carved between 4 BC and 12 AD and are mostly Buddhist Viharas, except for one which is a Chaitya. Extremely well preserved, the Pandu caves have exquisite stone carvings and inscriptions in Pali.

After your visit to these mystical remains of India's tryst with Buddhism, return to the Deccan Odyssey for lunch.

In the afternoon drive to the Godavari for a walk along the Ghats, observing the activity and Hindu rituals being performed. Continue on to the Naro Shankar Temple, built in 1747 by Raje Bahadur of Nashik and dedicated to Lord Shiva. This small yet lovely temple, located right alongside the Godavari, has a church bell adorning its top. The bell is said to serve the purpose of an alarm; the rising water levels of the river in flood set the bell ringing. A beautifully carved Nandi, the bull that serves as Shiva's vehicle, is located at the entrance of the temple while just outside is a vibrant market offering colorful pooja items. Also visit the Kalaram, literally Black Ram, temple, an ancient Hindu shrine of the 18th century which houses idols of Ram, Sita and Lakshman in black stone. The temple itself is beautifully constructed using black stone and stands almost untouched by the ravages of time. It is believed that during their 14 year exile Ram, Sita and Lakshman stayed at this spot, called Panchavati, on the northern banks of Godavari.

Your walk of the Godavari Ghats completed, return to the Deccan Odyssey for dinner and set forth for Shirdi, the abode of one of India's most revered saints, Sai Baba.

Shirdi (1 night)

Days  ( 3 - 4 )

Shirdi

Shirdi

Shirdi is in Maharashtra and is grouped under the authority of Shirdi Nagar Panchayat. You can reach the pilgrimage destination via the Ahmednagar - Manmad State Highway 10.

Activities

The Deccan Odyssey arrives at Shirdi this morning, having traveled through the enchanting Sahyadri mountain range. A pilgrimage spot of extreme significance, Shirdi was home to Sai Baba, a saint who lived here from 1838 to 1918. Considered to be one the most holy men of India, Sai Baba was confined to no single religion or faith, espousing love, brotherhood and humanity amongst all mankind. His lessons, teachings and the miracles he's said to have performed are now part of the lore of Shirdi, where devotees gather in vast numbers to visit the shrine where he is entombed.

After a hearty breakfast on board, disembark and drive to the Sai Baba Temple. Your morning will be spent at the sprawling temple complex, partaking of the rituals and viewing the memorabilia of the great saint. A statue of Sai Baba, made from white marble, is remarkably lifelike with eyes that seem to actually convey the love and compassion the seer was famous for.

Return to the Deccan Odyssey for lunch and some rest before heading back into town in the early evening.

Visit the Dwarkamai mosque where Sai Baba spent 60 years of his life; it is here he performed miracles in a durbar that was held for his devotees and disciples. The sacred fire that he lit here still burns, kept alight at all times, from which the Vibhuti, sacred ash, is collected every day and distributed among the faithful. Also visit the GuruSthan, the tree under which Sai Baba was first spotted meditating as a youth of 16. Aside from these, there are several smaller temples worth visiting in the temple complex, including the Dakshin Mukhi Hanuman.

The Deccan Odyssey will be stationed at Shirdi for the night.

Activities

Begin your day after breakfast this morning, heading to holy town of neighbouring Shringnapur. Spend the day visiting Shani Shringnapur, the village of the resident deity Lord Shani, the personification of the planet Saturn, in Hinduism. Thronged by people wanting to pay obeisance to the deity in an effort to protect themselves from evil and ill-luck, the temple has no idol, with a black stone set upon a magnificent platform serving as the manifest deity. The offerings and poojas can also be performed by the worshiper himself, without any priests. Shringnapur is considered to be a Jagrut Dev Sthan, where it is believed that the deity protects the entire village against all evils. A unique aspect of this is that there are no doors or locks in the town as no crime has ever been reported from here.

Drive back to the Deccan Odyssey for lunch and a little rest before heading back to the Shirdi temple complex in the evening to witness the sunset aarti.

In the evening return to the Deccan Odyssey for dinner as it heads for Mumbai.
