The Great Sanchi Stupa

Constructed upon the order by Samrat Ashok in the 3rd century, the 'Great Stupa' is the most prominent attraction in town. The entire stone structure was built under the watchful eye of the emperor’s queen Devi who was born in Sanchi. At the epicenter of the monument is a crescent shaped brick construction that is covered by a dome shaped structure meant to protect and preserve Buddha relics. The exterior of the building was later improved with the addition of 4 ornately engraved toranas.
