The Great Wall of India

The Mewar fortress was erected on top of a hill at an impressive 1100 mts over sea level. Its wall has been called the Great Wall of India as it stretches as far as 36 kilometres making it second to only the Great Wall of China. The ancient 15th century fortress is today a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site visited by scores of tourists each year.

Tourists can take in breathtaking views of the hillside and the sparsely populated desert from the towering walls of the fort. The majestic gateway of the Kumbhalgarh is known as Ram Pol and is quite a sight to take in. The other gate is known as Hanuman Pol honors a human sacrifice made willingly at the time of construction. The entire fortress can be explored during the day and makes for an eye-catching vision at sunset when it is marvelously lit up for a while.

Travelers can also visit the nearby Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary that is home to a wide variety of fauna and birds native to the region.
