The capital city to the Himalayan state of Sikkim, Gangtok is a rather vibrant hill station that means “hillslide” in Tibetan. With a rather indigenous group of people with Nepalese and Tibetan ancestry, this region opens doors to a rather unique environment from the rest of the country.
Heading on Treks from Gangtok
This city acts as an excellent base for tourists intending to head on hikes of treks in the Himalayan ranges. Often considered to be the Switzerland of the east, this city is extremely well maintained and among the cleanest cities in India. Reminiscent of the Bhutanese capita, Timphu, spending a few nights here will not disappoint.
Exploring Local Attractions
While you are in the city, you may want to take the short drive to the Rumtek Monastery that is only 24 km from Gangtok in the east of the state. Considered to be the main seat for the School of Tibetan Buddhism in Sikkim, the Karma Kagyu this monastery has been around for almost 400 years.
Other popular destinations include the Tsongmo Lake, the Nathu La Pass, the Baba Bandi and the Gurudongmar Lake.
