The place is perfect for hiking through the dense green forest. But once you’ve marched through it, you move into a wide open valley, which is so uncommon in Bhutan.
The locals have stories too that they pass on about different things like how the riverscame into being and why rice cannot be cultivated in the valley and so on. You can sit with the locals and learn about the land, their culture and history. They are war loving people who’d enjoy your company.
The Black-Necked Crane Information Center has the best seats in the whole of Phobjika to observe the migratory birds during the winter. The Information Centre is well equipped with high power telescopes to see them better.
The village of Gangtey has its own attraction too. The Gangtey Goempa monastery is perched on a little hill that elevates from the valley floor. It is the largest Nyingmapa Monastery in the country. It’s also the Black Mountain’s only Nyingmapa Monastery on its western side. All around it is a village inhabited by families devoted to help take care of the monastery.
