Season : All through the year, avoid Dec, Jan, Feb

Duration :
06 Days

Chintpurni

Like all Indian mythology is linked to a legend, the legends of the origins of both Chitpurni and Jawalaji bear historical links.

Bhagat Mai Dass was a great devotee of Goddess Durga, he along with his family migrated from Patiala to Punjab to Rapoh village in Una in Himachal. One day Bhagat Mai Dass was going to his faltha –in – law’s place. Being fatigued of walking, he slept in the jungle under a tree. A young girl appeared in a dream and she wanted him to stay there and worship her. Goddess Parvati’s feet fell at Chintpurni and Mai Dass built a temple on the site. The image is depicted as headless as legend say the head was cut off to assuage the blood thirst of her companion. Hence the temple is called Chinmastika Devi (Goddess without a head).

The Idol of Chhina Mastaka, the destroyer of the demon Nishumbha is worshipped at Chintpurni Temple Pilgrims come here around the year, however there are these auspicious festival – one during the Ramnavami ( Navratra) a 9 days festival, second a 10 days festival in August and third the Navaratras ( 9 days before Durga pooja) in September / October.

Jwalamukhi ( Jwalaji )

In ancient times the demons lorded over the Himalaya Mountains, harassing the Gods. Led to Lord Vishnu, the Gods decided to destroy the demons. Through their collective strength they created a huge fire and from the flames a young girl took birth. She is regarded as Adi Shakti (first strength) Know as Sati on Goddess Parvati the girl grew up at the house of Prajapati Daksha. Parvati later 9 SAT) become the consort of Lord Shiva. Legend says that Parvati’s father once insulted Shiva, being an ash smeared ascetic, riding a Nandi (bull). Unable to accept the insult she killed herself.

As Shiva learnt of his consort’s death, his rage knew no bound. He carried the body on his shoulders and began a world wind dance (the form of Shiva as Natraj). As the gods trembled before his wrath, Lord Vishnu intervened. He let fly a volley of arrows which struck Sati’s body and severed it to pieces. The body fell at 51 places on earth, which later become 51 sacred ‘ Shakti Peeths” ( pilgrimages).

At Jwalaji, Sati’s tongue fell and tiny blue flame burns through fissures in an age old rock.
