The Aanayottam or the Elephant race at the Guruvayoor temple in Kerala will be held on 12th March 2014, it is an annual event that marks the beginning of the 10 day long temple festival.  There is a legend behind this race. Once when Guruvayoor temple did not have any elephants, it is said that elephants from the adjoining temples raced to Guruvayoor to get the idol on their heads.  The number of jumbos at the temple has since steadily increased to 62 over the years and every year this race attracts not just local devotees but also tourists from all over the globe in large numbers.

Thiruvananthapuram:  Travel guides publisher Lonely Planet has named Kerala among the world’s 10 best destinations for taking the family on a holiday in 2014. The Lonely Planet’s award for the best family destination was bestowed on ‘God’s Own Country’ at the World Travel Mart in London, the world’s leading travel trade event attended by industry representatives from across the globe, a statement issued in Thiruvananthapuram said. The World Travel Mart, which began on November 4, concluded on Thursday. Kerala Named Among Top Ten Holiday Destinations

Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, paid an official visit to Parmarth Niketan Ashram, Rishikesh as the first destination of their nine-day visit to India on 6th Nov 2013. Arriving just before sunset, the royal highnesses took part in the sacred evening ‘aarti’ ceremony (ritual of lights), which is an internationally-renowned highlight of Parmarth Niketan’s daily activities. Prior to the ‘aarti’, they observed the final offering of a ‘yagna’ (fire ceremony) for world peace and environmental preservation, led by the president of Parmarth Niketan, Swami Chidanand Saraswati. Offering traditional herbs and seeds into the fire to the rhythm of ancient Vedic prayers, the royals took part in one of the most ancient rituals of the Indian tradition, performed on this occasion as a prayer for a healthy environment and peaceful world. The airports of Bhubaneswar and Imphal will finally be granted an international status after the approval of the Union Cabinet on October 30, 2013. Both the airports have been renovated for suitable requirements and facilities needed for an international airport. The night operating facility has been completed along with more check-in counters, establishment of immigration services, ample space for health services, and animal and plant quarantine. “The declaration of these airports as international airports will offer improved connectivity, wider choice of services at competitive cost to the air travellers, resulting in boosting international tourism and economic development of the region and the country,” the Ministry of Civil Aviation said in a statement.
